What is volunteering?

There has been much debate over the definition of volunteering. For the purposes of volunteering policies the Cabinet Office defines volunteering and volunteering opportunities as any non-compulsory activity which involves spending time, unpaid, doing something which is of benefit to others (excluding relatives), society or the environment.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

To you as a student:

  • Enhance your CV and employability
  • Build your confidence
  • Introduce you to new friends
  • Create more fun in your life
  • Improve your health

To the community:

  • Builds a caring society of active citizens
  • Widens participation and tackles social exclusion
  • Makes an economic impact; volunteering contributes £4.8 billion to UK GNP and is the fastest growing job sector
  • To make a difference in someone’s life
  • Breaks down stereotypes of students that the local community may have

What are the different areas I can volunteer in?

The volunteering opportunities within Merseyside are endless and it is unlikely that you will not be able to find one that suits your skills and interests.
The areas include:

  • Environment
  • Children and Youth
  • Elderly
  • Disability
  • Arts and Culture
  • Sport
  • Fundraising
  • Health
  • One-offs
  • Academic
  • Admin and IT
