► Library Opening Hours to increase!

18th June 2010 11:34 am

After meeting with the Guild, the Library have made significant changes, increasing opening hours, particularly around the summer vacation.

This year the Library and the Guild have been getting feedback from students on the services they get from the University Libraries. In particular, Postgraduates, users of the Harold Cohen, and those needing access during resits told us about some of their concerns.

The University’s five year strategic plan places the student experience at the heart of its concerns and despite challenging financial conditions, meeting with the library team, the Guild have helped make two significant changes which will benefit our students.

Firstly, to ensure that the Harold Cohen stays open for 24 hours for a week after the end of term, and then until 11pm until the exams at that end of the campus are finished (a major bone of contention among Medics).

Secondly, the libraries will stay open in the evening from re-sits to the end of Welcome Week (in recognition, chiefly, of the fact that this is a busy period for the growing number of postgrads).

University Librarian Phil Sykes said:

‘One of the strengths of the University is the good working relationship between the Library and the Guild.  It helps the Library to be realistic about what students want, and the Guild to be realistic about what the Library can feasibly do when money is tight.  In this case it has allowed us to make some targeted improvements to vacation opening hours that are not too costly but have a real impact on students, particularly postgraduates’

This latest development comes in a year when LGoS has worked with the University to achieve so much for the student experience – from ensuring that Wednesday afternoons are kept from teaching for all postgraduate students (not just undergraduates); winning on policies which make sure that all feedback on assessments should be delivered within three weeks of submission for all students; to changing the University’s policy on calculators - giving students some choice in what equipment they use; and securing a full review of personal tuition and PDP, to ensure that no student is left unsupported or undeveloped during their programme.

LGoS President Dannie Grufferty added:

‘Without Guild officers making efforts to go out and speak to our students about some of their academic concerns, we would not have been able to produce the numbers to the University, showing them that hundreds of students were calling for extended opening hours over summer.  The University’s, and particularly the Library’s swift response is much welcomed, we often know that the issues we were concerned about our shared by the University and thus you are always surprised by the progress you can make!’
