Fairtrade University

Working in partnership, the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Guild of Students have taken the UK one step further in supporting the aims of Fairtrade by securing Fairtrade status for the University, joining the 50 higher education institutions that have already pledged their support in action as well as words.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers.

This is achieved by guaranteeing farmers a fair price for their products (one that covers the cost of production and guarantees a sustainable living); long-term contracts which provide real security; and, for many, support to gain the knowledge and skills that they need to develop their businesses and increase sales.
