Green Pages

Welcome to the Green Pages...

On this section of the LGoS website you can find out loads of Green information; from environmentally friendly projects currently running at the Guild to an infographic poster detailing what we are doing in terms of water stewardship (under The Problem with Water tab).

Also, keep up to date with events and interesting links on our Green News section.

Liverpool Guild of Students is committed to minimising the environmental impact of the organisation’s activities through continuous improvements. We seek to develop an ethos of environmental responsibility amongst both the members and staff of LGoS, and in the management of its operations.

We recognise that in pursuing these aims there exists the opportunity to both protect its immediate environment and, through the demonstration of appropriate practice, promote the use of sustainable resources and methods and discourage those that are wasteful or damaging.

Therefore, LGoS will

1. comply with all relevant environmental legislation and take such additional environmental protection measures as it considers necessary;

2. operate in a socially, ethically and environmentally responsible manner;

3. promote awareness and understanding of environmental issues among all staff, students and visitors in line with the Environmental Communications Strategy;

4. integrate environmental management policies and practices at all levels and in all departments;

5. conserve energy and water efficiently within all its premises;

6. reduce waste of natural resources, promote waste reduction and recycling and, through tendering and purchasing procedures, promote sustainable development;

7. regulate all waste production and disposal and discourage litter, graffiti and noise pollution;

8. reduce and, where practicable, prevent pollution by avoiding the unnecessary use of hazardous materials and processes, taking all possible steps to prevent damage to either public or ecological health where the use of such materials is essential;

9. promote the use of sustainable transport options;

10. consider the environmental impact of all new developments;

11. consider the environmental impact of decommissioning and disposal of its assets;

12. encourage staff and student initiatives to improve environmental performance;

13. aim at improving its accreditation by the nationally recognised environmental management standard promoted through NUS Services Ltd., known as the Green Impact Awards, as a benchmark of good environmental practice;

14. ensure that this policy and all reports and reviews of environmental performance and progress are communicated to all LGoS staff and students of the University of Liverpool; and

15. take all suitable opportunities to encourage its partners, suppliers and sub-contractors to improve their own environmental performance.

Green Impact

Run by the National Union of Students trading arm, NUS Services, the Green Impact Students’ Union program is an accreditation scheme for environmental good-practice in students’ unions.

NUS established the scheme in 2005 to encourage, nurture, reward and celebrate the good ethical and environmental practice carried out by member Students’ Unions and to share good practice in the sector.

Having successfully improved its rating year on year, Liverpool Guild of Students is aiming to maintain a Gold standard this year in the Green Impact program by working towards being more sustainable and environmentally friendly in its activities.

Last year Liverpool Guild of Students also won the Green Innovation Award for our Green Fingers project and community food growing schemes. The Green Innovation Award recognises the innovative projects that students’ unions put in place to improve their environmental performance. Over the past few years, the University of Liverpool’s Children’s Centre has grown vegetables, salads and herbs on their garden plot with the produce being cooked and used in the children’s lunches. Working in partnership with Ness Gardens volunteers have educated the children about healthy living and horticulture through various activities.
