Halls Student Committees
Living in University Halls of Residence is a great way to start your University life – there are always lots of different activities and events taking place for you to get involved in which will help you meet other people and make your time living here more enjoyable.
The Halls Student Committees (HSCs) play an important role in contributing to this aspect of hall life.
Each hall across the Carnatic and Greenbank Sites has a Hall Student Committee. These are committees run by students, for students with support from staff at halls and at the Guild of Students.
The HSCs each have a significant budget, made up of a small contribution from each resident’s halls fees, which they use to plan and organise social events for their hall. In the past these events have included Christmas and Summer Balls, themed parties, charity nights, quizzes, day trips and sporting events. The HSCs also help support other aspects of hall life, for example giving financial support to the hall sport teams and spending money on improving common room facilities.
Besides organising events and activities another key role of the HSC is to represent the views and opinions of the other students in their hall. HSC members provide feedback to halls management and the wider University about issues affecting you in halls, and this feedback is then used to help improve services and facilities for both current and future hall residents.
HSCs are open to everyone and are made up of students like you. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to get involved, and there are lots of different positions on each committee to suit different interests and skills.
There are many reasons to get involved, for example, you will always be the first to know about what is happening in the hall, you will get to decide what sort of events take place, you will gain valuable skills and experiences (it will look great on your CV!) and you will also get the chance to make friends with people you might otherwise not have met. Being on the HSC has also been a good springboard for past members to get more involved with student representation, with past members going on to take key positions in the Guild of Students and NUS.
If you think becoming a member of your halls HSC might be for you, it’s easy to get involved. The first step is visiting the Welcome Fair held at halls after you arrive in September where you can find out from past members what it’s actually like to be on the HSC and what’s involved.
