► Work Placements and Overseas Placements

12.     Work Placements and Overseas Placements

12.1   Building upon the aims to internationalise the curricula and to enhance our students’ employability, it is our aim that all undergraduate students should have the opportunity to undertake work placements (either paid or voluntary) and/or experience a placement abroad. Therefore opportunities for these need to be incorporated within the curriculum as credit-bearing modules that are assessed. Depending on the nature of the programme and the placements available, these could be optional, required or mandatory modules.

12.2   Where appropriate, consideration should be given to the development of sandwich courses and to delivery through non-traditional approaches that involve employers more than is customary at present.

12.3   It is proposed that undergraduate programmes be designed to include the opportunity for work placements and placements abroad.

LGoS believes:
  • This would seem to be a very positive ambition for the students at the University of Liverpool
  • Again, the University must be careful that placements are available to all types of students, be they undergraduate or postgraduate; 18-25 or mature students; part time or full time; UK or international.
  • Also, placements inside the UK should be carefully considered if students have to combine work with study, or students have responsibilities that tie them to a particular geographical region, e.g. parental responsibilities.
  • It goes without saying that if students are to leave the University on a mass scale the University and Guild should work together to create initiatives to carbon offset their travel.
  • The University should give help and support to students while they are planning their year abroad. It is also essential that whilst students are abroad they are given the support their need, especially in the event of an emergency.
  • The Officers also feel that this provides a good opportunity for students to engage with interdisciplinary work that would be condusive to their employment after they graduate, for example an archaeology student may not wish to actually do archaeology during their year abroad, rather they should work on skills extra to their course.

How imporant would a work placement or time abroad be to you?
