► Research-led Teaching

Full Extract from Consultation Document

 4.       Research-led Teaching

4.1     In the report that followed the QAA Institutional Audit of the University, one of the recommendations was that the University should give “serious consideration to developing and supporting models of integration between research and teaching across the full range of its curricula” and indeed research-led teaching is central to the University’s plans. It can be regarded as teaching informed or inspired by research; teaching that leads the student towards research; and teaching that helps set an agenda for research.  The most appropriate formulation is likely to vary between subject areas.

4.2     Postgraduate taught curricula should be underpinned by a clear definition of research-led teaching; and should use innovative material that is offered within a research-led academic environment.

4.3     The curricula of undergraduate programmes should likewise be underpinned by a clear idea of what is meant by research-led teaching. Where appropriate to the nature of the degree programme, the curricula should incorporate a research element.

4.4     It is proposed that each Level 2 School (or, where necessary, Department) should determine the most appropriate model for them to deliver research-led teaching and that this be embedded and evidenced within its revised UG and PGT curricula.

LGoS believes:
  • Students enjoy being taught by world leaders in their field, and the University of Liverpool is one of very few universities in the UK where this happens across the board.
  • Students should also be taught about how to be excellent researchers, by excellent researchers.
  • We would support the University in improving their Research performance so long as it does not negatively affect the student experience, including in learning and teaching.
  • We would also recommend that for the benefit of all staff and students, that the University sets out in explicit detail its definition of “research-led teaching”
  • It is also worth pointing out that students expect an environment condusive to Research led teaching; which may involve improvements to both the virtual and physical environments that students are engaged in - such as the libraries and VITAL.

What would research-led teaching mean to you?
