What is a Course Rep?

Every programme at all levels will have at least one student, elected by their group to represent the group's opinions to the university
A Course Rep is a student representative who sits on the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) for their department. They represent the views of other students on their programme by going out and regularly collecting feedback from them.

Below are the minimum requirements to being a student rep:

The Golden Rule of 1:

1 hour a week:
Speak to students. Knowing what students want, think and feel about their academic experience is the most important part of being an effective student rep.

1 afternoon a month: Report back what you are doing. You need feedback from your lecturers, and your students need feedback from you. Attending the University Life forum also gives you a great opportunity to feedback to students what progress you have made.

1 meeting a term: Attend your SSLC. This is where you can get changes actually made. Make sure that you put the issues students want talking about on the agenda. You can do this by contacting your SSLC administrator. Find out who they are by clicking here.

1 day a year: Attend a training session. Initial training sessions are put on by LGoS at the start of term. It is essential you attend one of these to ensure you have the info & skills you need for the coming year.

The above is purely the bare minimum; there are plenty of other things you can do to become an even better Course Rep.
For example:

  • Sit on your Board of Studies, or any other departmental committee which has student representation. You should be told about these at your first SSLC, but make sure you ask if you’re not sure.
  • Become a Faculty Representative. You can be elected to this position at your first SSLC. As a Faculty Rep you will have the opportunity to attend Faculty level committees, and the Faculty Pool.
  • Become a Senate Representative. You can be elected to this position at the Faculty Pool. Senate Reps attend the University Senate, which is the highest decision making body in the University with student reps on it.
  • Run a campaign. You don’t have to wait for a committee to start asking for change. If there is something you really care about that’s not being listened to – get a campaign going. Not only can you get the change you want made, but it can also be lots of fun too!
